Stepping Into a Life of Overflow
Each year at Expression Church, we seek God’s direction for a theme that will shape our Sunday services, connect groups, outreach ministries, and our mission. This year, we sensed that Overflow is what God is leading us into. It’s something we prayed over, the leadership sought God about, and we fully believe He is calling us to embrace.
Why overflow?
Because our God is a God of abundance.
From Overwhelmed to Overflowing
What really stops us from overflowing? The “not enough” mentality.
Not enough money.
Not enough job experience.
Not enough education.
Not enough understanding of the word of God.
This mindset limits us. It stops us from walking in overflow. But Scripture says our God is more than enough!
When we limit ourselves by focusing on what we lack, we miss out on the power, peace, and promises of God.
And we become overwhelmed instead of overflowing.
What Does Overflow Look Like?
John 7:38 says, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
An overflow life is full, bountiful, and abundant! Not in a monetary sense, but in the spiritual richness of walking with God.
Psalm 23:5 says, "You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows with blessings."
David didn’t say, I have just enough. He said, my cup overflows! Our cup overflows with joy, peace, and hope. God invites us to dine at His table, to feast on His Word, and to live in His fullness.
Moving From Lack to Overflow
Many people live in spiritual scarcity because they have believed a lie that they are not enough. But look at the examples in the Bible:
Feeding of a hundred: Then a man came from Baal Shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley bread, and newly ripened grain in his knapsack. And he said, “Give it to the people, that they may eat.” But his servant said, “What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?” He said again, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the Lord: ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’ ” So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord. (2 Kings 4:42-44)
Jesus feeding the five thousand: With just five loaves and two fish, 5,000 people were fed. God is more than abundant.
Peter and the beggar: When the beggar asked Peter and John for money, Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6)
How to Live a Life of Overflow
1. Overflow Comes From God’s Presence
Overflow does not come from positive thinking or hype — it comes from being in God’s presence.
Psalm 16:11 says, "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence."
Do you want to know what your future looks like? Ask God.
When you meditate on God’s Word, you are not overwhelmed — you overflow.
Favour doesn’t come from the way you look; it comes from God.
2. Overflow Comes From Trusting God’s Word
Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
We don’t just read the Word — we trust the Word. We don’t just believe in God’s promises — we stand on them.
I pray that you will ask Jesus to teach you to trust God's Word. It’s not that we must trust first and then God will show up — sometimes it’s difficult to trust, and we don’t even want to because it feels too scary. But we can pray, 'God, I will trust You. Would You teach me?'
Trusting in God's Word means we stop striving in our own strength and start relying on Him. It's not about repeating scriptures mechanically — it's about living them.
God's promises are not just words on a page; they are powerful, active, and true.
When we stand on His Word, we walk in overflow.
3. Overflow Fuels Service, Not Burnout
Romans 15:13 says, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”
Serving should not leave us drained — it should leave us full. If we focus only on avoiding burnout, we may still operate from a place of lack. True service is fueled by God’s presence, not by our own strength. The more we pour into others, the more God pours into us.
When we trust Him, we step into a life where we are strengthened, refreshed, and sustained by His power.
We need to stop measuring our lives by what we don’t have and start standing on God’s promises.
Practical Steps to Live in Overflow
Connect with God daily
John 15:4 – “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
Trust in God's provision
Hebrews 13:5-6 – “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Pour into others
Proverbs 11:25 – “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Are you living in overflow or in lack?
Search your heart. Ask God to reveal the areas where you have been living in scarcity. Write them down. Surrender them to God. Replace the lies with His promises.
God is calling us to a supernatural life, not an ordinary one. Declare it today: My cup runs over! I trust in the Lord! I walk in the overflow of His promises!
